Have you been looking for spectrum glass and you find that there are very few options left or that very few suppliers selling it, right? The answer lies in the fact that this brand of glass, still very much required by artisans and professionals, is no longer for sale. We’ll tell you what happened next…
Spectrum Glass from Woodinville, Washington, USA, closed in 2016 after failed attempts to survive the economic recession and declining demand for stained glass. Added to this, and according to Craig Barker, CEO of Spectrum Glass, the new regulations of the Environmental Protection Agency of that country required adaptations and investments that by then the company could not afford.
Uroboros Glass, Oceanside Glass & Tile, Spectrum Glass logos.
This way, Spectrum Glass was listed among about 50 large glass manufacturers that closed their doors in the last 100 years. Faced with this reality, companies offering Spectrum glass-based products were in a hurry to find a solution. This was the case for Oceanside Glass & Tile, which relied heavily on supplies from Spectrum Glass Company and Uroboros Glass Company, which also closed in 2016.
So with great effort and investment, Oceanside took over both companies. In 2017 they bought the glass formulas and the equipment to continue the production of the lines from Tijuana, Mexico. Oceanside resumed production of its most demanded products, including the System 96 series, since then under the name Oceanside Compatible System 96.
So, if you have run out of any of the Spectrum glass options you can turn to your suppliers to see if they still have stocks of that brand. If not, don’t worry. Look at Oceanside’s product lines that are still the same glass but with a new name. In Color Glass Shop we offer many alternatives both in 20x30cm small sheets and in 61x122cm full glass sheets.
Spectrum Waterglass, now Waterglass Oceanside Compatible System 96.
As we mentioned earlier the Spectrum glass today is the Oceanside Compatible System 96 glass. That being said, yes, you can use this glass to make Tiffany or leaded windows, it will all depend on your budget. Oceanside Compatible glass is made to work with heat and its price is higher than the regular stained glass.
Spectrum, now Spirit Oceanside Compatible System 96.
The good thing about these glasses is that they have the same COE96 expansion coefficient, so you can combine both brands in your art works. Of course, you will find more options at Oceanside, some of its most outstanding lines are Opal Art, Pearl Opal, Spirit, semi-opalescent and semi-transparent veined, among others.
The Oceanside COE96 glass in small sheets vary between €7 and €18.5 approximately. The full sheets of these same glasses range from around €66 to €170.
On the other hand, the Wissmach COE96 glass cuttings vary between €6.5 and €14.5 approximately. Full sheets cost between €62 and €133.
